Ten Streets History Project

Following from the success of High Street stroll project (kindly supported by Lowestoft Town Council) we are considering a broader project.

email to be kept informed

What is it?

We will be working with ten teams of people from the local community to explore and research the history of their street. We will be providing a how to research pack, run regular workshops and give access to the finest local historians.

At the end of the six month project each team will have created a chapter to go in a printed book of the project and also have added to an online resource featuring information and old photographs of many of the properties in their street.

Uniquely this will also be available as an online' stroll  along their street in the form of two horizontal rows of photographs. The bottom row would show as the street currently looks and the top row the oldest (or most interesting) earlier version of the frontage. Clicking on one of the researched properties will lead to details of current usage, more old photos, properly researched local history and also a “memories” section with first hand reminiscences of their time in that house

An example of how this might look can be seen from the pilot project here (kindly supported by Lowestoft Town Council LTC)

We will also have aspects of the project which will look into the history of recycling and how local children would have played a century ago.

At the end of the project we will have

Dozens of local community amateur historians keen to continue to learn more and share their skills with others
Young people more engaged with their heritage and environment
A printed book of local history and architecture useful for future generations
A unique online resource that will keep growing even after the end of the project
A version of the above available offline as a CD or on USB stick (and available via the library service and LTC
Fostered the local expertise of local archivists, historians, photo restorers and web designers!
Distribute leaflets promoting all the OTHER local history groups/resources
