The Ness
(Darren has ideas on this!) I love Ness Point but I am in minority because I am a nerd and just wax lyrical about all the maths I could do with kids down there - most people don’t appreciate this so I will stop there… but I still want to promote it. Again, another contention because previous MP (BB) did not want to promote ‘Lowestoft: The Most Easterly Town’ nor ‘Ness Point - Britain’s most easterly point’ (Land’s End? S+W John O’Groats? N so why not E?).

1676 Samuel Pepys was elected a Master of the Trinity Brethren, and immediately sanctioned a new Lowestoft lighthouse. A new Lighthouse tower was constructed, built of brick, this time on the cliffs. This became known as Lowestoft High Light. Trinity in its earlier records sometimes refers to the northernmost of the two Ness Point foreshore lights as the 'upper' light, which can be confusing.(drawing p93).
Added: 23 September, 2023Tuesday's warning that gas shortages in this coming winter might lead to interrupted electricity supplies – that is, power cuts – reminded me of Lowestoft's own new power station.
Added: 23 September, 2023Looking southwards, along the North Sea Wall, to Ness Point - the most easterly part of the UK mainland. The presence of the Gulliver wind-turbine and the Orbis Energy Centre building just beyond it reminds us of Lowestoft’s role in the new world of renewable supplies of electricity - though it seems ironic that the turbine itself never seems to have its blades turning sufficiently to make any notable contribution to the National Grid.
