John Ellerby and Joe Thompson

Who’s involved?

Initially created and run by John Ellerby and Joe Thompson, to provide useful information to the community, the site continues to expand.

Originally it was a list of recycle centres and businesses in the High Street, now it also contains 'mini' sites for North Lowestoft Mens Shed and UseItAll among others.

Recently it has created a highly acclaimed wartime commemoration site called OurFallen, which is to be featured in the BBC programme "Who Do You Think You Are?"s National magazine (December issue).

Talking to the future

As the digital resources we are creating (StreetStroll and OurFallen) have been determined as having important heritage value we have been asked to 'ensure' they will be available for future generations.

If they were physical books, it would be straightforward, we would send copies to local, regional and national libraries and the job would be done! Digital is more of a challenge but we think it is important to address, both for our projects and also for other resources.

What’s this about?

Lowestoft Old and Now, focused on the local, embracing the past, changing the present and celebrating the future. A voice and resource centre for the individual and the group. A website created with the community at its core, which reflects the community is made up of a mosaic of overlapping, but independent identities. It’s a community website containing many other community websites which are dynamically linked together. What are the benefits?

Exciting times, we are planning on relaunching the site soon. We are making it simpler to use and pairing it back (initially) to its core features .

Score

The Scores Walk

The Scores are a series of narrow lanes and steep pathways running from Lowestoft High Street to the site of the town's former beach village. They formed a vital link between the town, which was built on a cliff, and the village, which had developed as a result of the fishing industry. With herring one of the most profitable exports, many workers came to live on the High Street and would have used the scores to go and work in the beach village processing fish.

Ness point

Walk to Ness Point

(Darren has ideas on this!) I love Ness Point but I am in minority because I am a nerd and just wax lyrical about all the maths I could do with kids down there - most people don’t appreciate this so I will stop there… but I still want to promote it. Again, another contention because previous MP (BB) did not want to promote ‘Lowestoft: The Most Easterly Town’ nor ‘Ness Point - Britain’s most easterly point’ (Land’s End? S+W John O’Groats? N so why not E?).

Ness Point Powerstation October 2022

New Power Station at Ness Point

Tuesday's warning that gas shortages in this coming winter might lead to interrupted electricity supplies – that is, power cuts – reminded me of Lowestoft's own new power station.

Shed coming in to land

Shed Lands Safely

North Lowestoft Men's Shed landed last Wednesday 5th July 2023.

The lorry hove into view around 5.30pm.

We were taking delivery of a 6m x 2.3m flatpack steel shed – with windows, and, usefully, a door.

We've spent the last two weeks pondering on and creating the foundations – not finished yet.

Once they've been done and cured, we'll start the build. The instructions look simple...

Right now, we can't take on any more members, but once our shed is built, we hope to be able to do so.
